State of the Stash: 2023 Savings Goals – Coast FI?

If you are new to my blog, or this series of “State of the Stash” posts, I am tracking my liquid savings/marketable investments. These posts are sort of a finance and investing journal, so I can look back and see what I was thinking and (hopefully) how I achieved certain financial and savings goals. The primary benefit for me is to have a “forcing function” to make me drill down and see what’s going on. If you’re more interested in electronically chatting about investments, these posts are probably not of interest to you.

Paying in Cash? Who Does That?

In the time of covid-19, paying in cash definitely seems like an anachronism. This is an investing post, however, and I’m not writing about buying items with paper money. Rather, I’m thinking about companies that do not pay their execs and boards by issuing stock.

This is probably even more rare than cash payments during covid. It could also be a telling signal about the culture of a company and its people.

My Fun Fund and The Great Cessation

This is going to be a quick Fun Fund investment journal update to document my thoughts (and actions), so that I can hopefully reflect and improve over time (and, perhaps more likely, for our mutual future amusement).

I sold some stocks in my Fun Fund account last Friday, as a matter of portfolio management. If I am totally honest, however, I am also expressing a view about the overall market. The timing of “trimming” these positions was influenced by my view of the current risks and rewards on offer in the equity market.

I’ll Have What He’s Having – Behavioral Personal Finance

Behavioral Finance Tricks I Use on Myself

So, I have not written a ton about personal finance topics on this blog. In my mind, I am kind of holding off on those topics until and unless I am able to accumulate a significant amount of financial assets and reach “financial independence.” If there is an interest in more discussion of these sorts of topics, drop me a comment and I will try and oblige.

A few weeks ago, Daniel Egan who is with Betterment (a robo-advisor) shared a recent post he published on the Betterment blog. By the way, Egan is a good follow on twitter (@daniel_egan). The post was about how he uses lessons from behavioral science to help him manage his personal finances.

Einhorn Versus Buffett: a Great and the GOAT on AAPL

David Einhorn recently issued his investor letter for the third quarter, generating media reports concerning the contents.  He reportedly compared Tesla to Lehman Brothers (I recently discussed Tesla here).   He also went on to discuss his decision to liquidate his Apple (“AAPL”) position.  See CNBC story reporting on letter.

Einhorn’s stated reasons for this move, the process and circumstances surrounding this action, as contrasted with those of Buffett’s AAPL investment, led to a couple of observations. Continue reading “Einhorn Versus Buffett: a Great and the GOAT on AAPL”

A Curious New Pod

A week screamed by and I did not get to post.  If you were bothered by this…great!  Also, I apologize.  I have a young kid, a career, and a dog (two, actually) that is literally hitting my leg with his stuffed chicken toy, insisting that I play with him, as I type this.  In between diapers and toy tosses, however, I was able to get through some pods.  Continue reading “A Curious New Pod”

Good Things…

This is another in my series of media curation posts.  Hopefully you are enjoying these podcasts and other finance-related content.  This week, I have another new podcast and we venture back into the world of REITs and real estate. Continue reading “Good Things…”

A New(ish) Podcast

I have been finding a lot of great new podcasts and the “classic casts” have been cranking out really strong episodes lately, so I should be set with these curation posts for a while (I was kind of casting about for something to highlight the last couple of weeks).  This week I want to flag a brand new (to me) podcast. Continue reading “A New(ish) Podcast”

Weekly Media Pin – Double Entendre Edition

This week I am highlighting an interview and a related book for you.  I wanted to go ahead and get it out since it is almost 5:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon and I was afraid someone might read this post if I published at any other time. Continue reading “Weekly Media Pin – Double Entendre Edition”
